The Mistaken Translation

“For God so hated the sins of humanity the he sent his one and only son that whosoever prayed the sinners prayer would not burn in Hell.”

So often this is how the gospel is presented: a get out of hell free card from a God frustrated with humanity. And what is more, I think we often believe the gospel to consist of no more than sin equalizing. In effort to preserve God’s holiness, we stamp out his compassion.

Does God hate sin? Yes. Is He holy and righteous? Yes. Is He only able to accept perfection? Yes.  However, it is because of “his kindness, forbearance and patience… kindness intended to lead you to repentance” (Romans 2:4) that he sent Jesus “who had no sin to be sin for us that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Out of God’s compassion and grace He stooped down to his creation to restore relationship with us. I do not believe in a gospel of appeasement, for that is no gospel at all. I believe in a gospel of reconciliation.

Christ did not only die to save us from Hell, but so that we could enter back into relationship with Him. That, once again, we may be able to walk with Him as we did in Eden, and live in the restoring riches of His grace. That we would know..

“The surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.” (Phillipians 8-9)

Do not believe the mistake translation of John 3:16. Christ came out of a motivation of love– not hatred. His mercy and holiness accomplished our salvation on the cross so that we could be forgiven.

I pray that you would know his life changing, heart healing grace. The true message of John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world that He his one and only son, that whosoever believed in Him would not perish, but have ever lasting life.”

John 3:16
